About PlantPosters
Botany from yesteryear
We are plant people with a passion for art and history. Every week we choose one plant of real interest and beauty from the great illustrated botanical books of the past, scan and digitally clean the original hand-coloured plate, and print it to order as a poster for your wall.
Each poster comes with the plant's story: where it grows, who found it, who drew it, and what makes it worth a second look.
One plate a week
A new poster is published every week and the previous ones move into the archive, so the collection grows like a journal.
Printed to order
Posters are printed in the UK when you order them, in A4, A3 and A2, and posted to you. Prices include delivery.
Free to all
The plates are in the public domain. We credit the scan and the artist on every poster page, and you are welcome to use the originals yourself.
Where the plates come from
Our posters are drawn from the great illustrated botanical books of two centuries: from Elizabeth Blackwell's Curious Herbal of 1737 and Thornton's Temple of Flora, through Redouté's roses and lilies, Sibthorp's Flora Graeca and the Victorian magazines of Curtis, Paxton and van Houtte, to Köhler's Medizinal-Pflanzen and the orchid folios of the 1890s. Every plate was drawn from a living plant and coloured by hand or printed in colour from the artist's painting, and every one is credited to its artist, engraver and book on the poster page.
The scans are made available by the Biodiversity Heritage Library and the Internet Archive, which between them have digitised millions of pages from the libraries of botanic gardens and museums and released them without restriction. We clean each scan, correct the colour and prepare it for print at the original size and larger.
How it works
Each poster is offered in three sizes: A4 at £10, A3 at £15 and A2 at £25, delivery included. This week's poster is 10% off for the week it is featured, and any three A4 prints are £20 together.
Pick a size on any poster page, add it to your basket, and tell us where to send it.
Delivery and returns
We post to UK addresses only for now. Posters are printed to order, so please allow up to a week. If a print arrives damaged or isn't what you ordered, email us within 14 days and we'll replace it or refund you.
Your details
We keep your name, address and email only to print and post your order, and your email address if you sign up for the weekly poster. We don't use tracking cookies or share your details with anyone except the printer who fulfils your order.
